About Orange County Criminal History

Orange County criminal records are divided among the Sheriff, the Clerk of Superior Court, town police departments, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Adult Correction, and the state registry. This private reference site organizes those official channels for people researching records in Hillsborough, Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and the rest of Orange County. It is not connected with any government agency.

Why We Built This Site

North Carolina permits access to many court and public-record materials, yet no single office keeps every part of a criminal history. The Clerk maintains Orange County case files. The Sheriff creates booking and jail records and supplies local registration information to the North Carolina Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry. Municipal police departments keep their own reports, the State Bureau of Investigation holds the fingerprint-linked state repository, and the Department of Adult Correction maintains prison and supervision data. Bringing the verified contacts, official portals, fees, and request routes together makes it easier to start with the actual custodian.

What You Will Find Here

The material is organized around the record holder and the question each record can answer.

  • Record instructions: ways to search and interpret Orange County criminal court cases
  • Official review routes: the difference between public court searches, certified county checks, and an SBI fingerprint Right to Review
  • Local contacts: current routes to the Orange County Sheriff, Clerk, detention center, and municipal police records units
  • Record relief: North Carolina expunction basics and Orange County Restoration Legal Counsel

What We Cannot Do

This remains a privately operated reference site with no role in North Carolina courts, police departments, the Sheriff's Office, or the SBI.

  • We cannot retrieve an official record or conduct an official background check
  • We cannot submit an expunction petition or public-record request for a visitor
  • We cannot certify a docket, rap sheet, arrest report, or booking record
  • We cannot give legal advice about a charge, warrant, or court outcome
  • We cannot promise that an agency's fee, address, or procedure has not changed

An official copy must come from the Orange County Clerk, Sheriff, police agency, SBI, or other office that created and maintains the source record.
